The number that’s lying to you

Most sellers who quit say the same thing: “I’m gated for 99% of the leads.” It feels true. It’s almost never true. What’s actually happening is that the list was never triaged — sorted by what you can sell right now versus what needs work. Once you sort it, “99% gated” usually turns into a pile of leads you could list today and a smaller pile worth real effort.

So before you spend a dollar or feel stuck, you’re going to learn to read a gate in ten seconds and sort your whole list. This is the highest-return 15 minutes in the entire sprint.

First, the reframe that changes how you see gates

A gate isn’t a wall — it’s a moat. Every category you’re gated in is a category most beginners can’t sell in either. Fewer sellers means less competition and better margins. The restricted leads aren’t the junk; they’re often the good ones. Getting in is the edge. That’s why this matters.

How to check any lead in ten seconds

Do this in desktop Seller Central, signed into the exact account you’ll sell on (approvals are per-account).

1. Catalog → Add Products.
2. Paste the ASIN (always use the ASIN, not the title — title search can match the wrong version).
3. Read the button on the result. That’s the whole game:

Honest note: gating is per-account, so as you work the bigger pool you’ll hit plenty of leads that bucket differently for you than the typical case — that’s expected, not a mistake. Your own Seller Central is always the final word, which is exactly the skill you’re building.
